Rome tourist tax: rates and stay costs

Budget €7.50 per person per night at a four-star hotel or €6 at a B&B. Check Rome's published rates, night limits and payment before booking.

Last updated

Rome's tourist tax adds a separate cost to an overnight stay. Work it out for each paying guest and night before you compare accommodation totals. The room price alone won't tell you the final bill. This guide explains the city's published rates and gives you a short set of questions to send your host.

The published Rome accommodation tax ranges from €3 to €10 per person per night, depending on the lodging category. A four-star hotel charges €7.50; a B&B or short-term rental charges €6. The standard limit is ten consecutive nights at the same property, or five at campsites. Children under ten are exempt. Check your booking's tax breakdown before paying again.

Rome tourist tax rates to check before booking

Use the property's registered category, rather than its price or the booking platform's review score. A guesthouse's category is different from a hotel's star rating. Ask the host which row applies if the listing doesn't say.

The Roma Capitale fee table gives these nightly amounts for each paying guest:

Accommodation Euros per person per night
One-star hotel €4
Two-star hotel €5
Three-star hotel €6
Four-star hotel €7.50
Five-star hotel or higher €10
Guesthouse / affittacamere, category 1 €7
Guesthouse / affittacamere, category 2 €6
Guesthouse / affittacamere, category 3 €5
Holiday home or apartment, category 1 €6
Holiday home or apartment, category 2 €5
Bed and breakfast €6
Tourist-use accommodation and short lets €6
Hostel / ostello in the tariff table €3.50
Campsite, tourist village or equipped temporary stopping area €3

The same table lists €6 for agritourism, tourist hotel residences, case per ferie and country houses. Mountain refuges, hiking shelters and case del camminatore are €3.50. Don't assume every business described as a “hostel” has the same legal category: the regulation separately lists an exemption for youth hostels, or ostelli della gioventù. Confirm the category with the operator.

The tariff date that matters

Use the rules that apply to your overnight stay, rather than the date you booked it. Turismo Roma's accommodation tax notice identifies the rates effective from 1 October 2023, approved by Resolution 255 of 17 July 2023. It says those rates apply to stays from that date regardless of the booking date.

We checked that notice and its linked city tariff table on 1 November 2026. The table remains labelled 2023 because that is its effective year. It isn't a new tariff created for this guide. Before a later trip, follow the official notice's current-information link and ask your host to confirm the amount for your dates.

Work out the cost for your party

Multiply the nightly rate by the number of paying guests and chargeable nights. These are examples calculated from the published rates, not room-price quotes:

  • Two paying guests, four nights in a three-star hotel: €6 × 2 × 4 = €48.
  • Two paying guests, four nights in a four-star hotel: €7.50 × 2 × 4 = €60.
  • Two adults and a child aged eight, three nights in a B&B: €6 × 2 × 3 = €36, using the under-ten exemption.

Write that amount beside the room total in your budget. When comparing two properties, keep the same guests and dates in both calculations. A cheaper nightly room rate can still carry the same tax as another property in its category.

These examples assume no other exemption. If someone turns ten during the trip, ask the property how it will record each night before treating the whole stay as exempt.

How the night limit works

The tariff table sets a standard maximum of ten consecutive nights in the same property within the calendar year. The outdoor-accommodation limit is five. Don't treat that as a single ten-night allowance covering every hotel on a multi-stop trip.

For example, two paying guests staying twelve consecutive nights in one four-star hotel would budget €150 for the ten chargeable nights: €7.50 × 2 × 10. Two paying guests camping for seven consecutive nights at one site would budget €30 for five chargeable nights: €3 × 2 × 5.

Tell the operator if your stay crosses New Year or involves returning to the property. Have it confirm the chargeable nights for that booking. Documented work or study stays have separate provisions in Article 6 of the city regulation; a holiday traveller shouldn't assume those apply.

Who pays Rome tourist tax and who may be exempt

The city's accommodation tax regulation applies to overnight guests who aren't residents of Roma Capitale. Article 5 exempts children under ten. It also sets out other exemptions with conditions, including certain medical stays and certified severe disability with a qualifying family caregiver.

If an exemption may apply, ask the accommodation which documents or declaration it needs before arrival. This guide doesn't list every exemption or decide eligibility. Use the city's wording for your situation rather than a general booking-site summary.

Check whether you have already paid

Read the booking confirmation's taxes and fees section first. Look for a separate city-tax amount and whether it is included, collected by the platform or payable at the property. If that isn't clear, ask for an itemised answer before sending another payment.

You can send this short message:

“Please confirm the registered accommodation category, the tourist tax per paying guest per night, and the chargeable nights for our dates. Has any of that tax already been collected through the booking? How should we pay any balance, and what receipt will we receive?”

Keep the reply with your booking confirmation. At payment, ask for the tax to appear separately on the receipt so you can compare it with the amount agreed. Don't assume every property requires cash or that every booking platform collects the tax in advance.

Common booking questions

Is the tax charged per room?

No. The tariff table states a per-person charge. Count paying guests separately from the number of rooms.

Does a holiday apartment avoid the tax?

No. The published table includes holiday apartments, tourist-use accommodation and short lets. Check the registered category rather than assuming that a private rental is exempt.

Is the whole family exempt if one child is under ten?

No. Apply the child's exemption to that child. The paying guests still need their own calculation, as the B&B example above shows.

Verdict: compare the full stay cost

Confirm the category, paying guests and chargeable nights before you book. Add the tax to your accommodation total, then check who collects it. Keep the official source and your host's written answer together. Once the budget is clear, use our Rome neighborhood guide to plan the area around the days you want to spend there.
