Visiting the Vatican necropolis

Separate the restricted Scavi visit from the Vatican Grottoes, basilica entry and museum tickets before requesting a place.

The necropolis under Vatican ground beneath St Peter's is an ancient burial site. Its guided visit is often called the Scavi tour. It is separate from the Vatican Grottoes and the Vatican Museums. Start with the Basilica's current request page. Then build the rest of your day around the confirmed time rather than assuming a place is open.

Choose the Scavi visit for the ancient burial area beneath St Peter's. You need a confirmed booking. Age and route rules apply. The public Grottoes are a different place. Check the terms first. Save the meeting details and leave time for security before the visit.

The necropolis under Vatican: which underground visit

“Below St Peter's” can refer to more than one space. The basilica's main floor, the papal Grottoes and the ancient burial site are not one open route. A broad church visit should not be read as permission to enter the limited excavation.

The Basilica's necropolis request page, checked 15 October 2026, sets out a guided visit approved by the Fabbrica di San Pietro. Use that page for the terms for your visit. A third-party article may retain rules from a different booking system or an earlier year.

If all you want is to see the main church and its burial area open to all visitors, read the basilica guide first. Do not book the dig just because a tour says “underground.” Check what it is first.

Check the current Scavi age rule

The Basilica's current page admits visitors from age ten. It sets out small language-based groups with a trained guide. Older advice often quotes a different minimum age. Do not use that as the current rule without checking the source.

The minimum age is only one part of the choice. Ask whether the setting and pace suit each person in your party. Do not book on the hope that a child below the stated minimum can join after an explanation at the gate. Choose a different plan for that part of the group before requesting places.

The Basilica's page warns about heat and damp below ground. It advises people whose health could suffer there, including those with claustrophobia, not to join. Use that warning to decide suitability, rather than assuming that a short guided route is always easy.

Request, booking notice and meeting instructions

A request is not the same as an accepted booking. Follow the Scavi Office's current process and retain the response that shows the date, time and language, plus number of people. Do not arrange a tight chain of other paid visits around a time you merely requested.

Check the payment instructions in that booking notice. The current public page states card payment and sets out the ticket options. No price quoted by an old travel post should replace the terms attached to your actual request.

Save the instructions offline. Use the named entrance and arrival time. A broad map pin for the Vatican is not enough. If part of the details is unclear, resolve it with the Scavi Office before travel. Check any unclear point with the office before you pay.

Protect the time around the necropolis under Vatican

Treat a confirmed Scavi slot as the fixed part of the day. Put a flexible square walk or meal around it. A dome climb, another museum queue or a long journey immediately before the meeting time creates avoidable risk.

The Basilica's page describes a visit of about an hour. Special events may cause it to be cancelled or moved. You need more time to arrive and leave. The stated length is not a promise about when you will reach the next stop.

If you want both the Museums and the church area, check their separate entrances and your exact onward route. Two places may look close on a map. You may still need entry checks at both. Giving each visit its own block is often the more useful plan.

What the photo on this page shows

The photo shows the outside of St Peter's. It shows the building above the ancient burial site. It does not claim to document the limited underground route. A photo of the main church cannot prove which ancient spaces your confirmed visit will include.

Follow your guide's instructions about movement and photography. Make sure the route suits the people who share the small group. If you have an access need, ask before booking. The main church and the spaces below do not share all the same services.

For a different form of underground history in Rome, the catacombs guide explains how to choose among those visits. Catacombs and this burial site are not the same visit. They use different tickets.

FAQ

Is Scavi the same as the Vatican Grottoes?

No. The limited ancient burial site and the papal Grottoes are different spaces with different entry rules. Check the exact name on the booking. A guide advertising the Grottoes is not always offering the Scavi excavation, and normal church entry does not prove a place on the limited guided route.

What is the current minimum age?

The Basilica's request page checked for this guide states entry from age ten. Verify it again when you request, since old posts may describe earlier rules. Age eligibility does not settle whether the underground setting suits a child or adult. Consider the route terms and the needs of your whole party.

Can I visit without a booking notice?

Do not build a plan around that assumption. Use the Scavi Office's request process and retain the response that states your place. Restricted access depends on the office's rules and site care needs. A broad Vatican tour booking or a request still awaiting a reply is not the same as a confirmed necropolis visit.

What if the Scavi visit does not suit someone?

Plan another visit that matches their interests and access needs, such as the square or a church visit that suits them. Agree how the party will meet afterward. Do not expect a limit or environmental warning to be waived on arrival, and do not pressure someone to join merely to keep the group together.

Verdict: confirm the necropolis under Vatican before adding more

Make the necropolis under Vatican ground the fixed part of the day only after your place is confirmed. Check the Basilica's current terms, decide if the setting suits everyone and wait for the confirmed rules. Keep the visit separate from the Grottoes and dome, plus Museums. A flexible day around a clear Scavi booking is more dependable than a packed itinerary built around a requested time.
